Thank you for visiting my blog and commenting on how you try to foster a growth mindset for your students and children. I have really enjoyed watching my students grow this year in their self-efficacy and their academics in math. I have seen a lot of changes in their attitudes towards math after working in small groups with my students.
My next question is: How have you tried to help students learn how to be successful when working with decimals? Do you try to tie your lesson to real life situations, such as money? Do you use manipulatives? Do you review place value a lot until they seem to have mastered the skills needed?
Also, why do you think students of all ages struggle with solving word problems? Is it really about reading issues? Is it pulling out keywords and context clues? Why do they freeze up as soon as they see a problem that has a lot of words in it? Most students know how to solve 4x5, but if it has words added to the problem they struggle to even know which math skills to use to solve the problem. Is it really about lack of number sense? And how do we help our students move past this struggle?
